CH1 - Organization Of The Body Flashcards
Physiology
The function of the parts of the human body.
List 9 levels of organization in the body from smallest to largest:
Atom, molecule, macromolecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism.
Anatomical position
Standing erect, facing forward, arms at sides, palms and toes directed forward.
Anterior
Part is located toward the front of the body
Posterior
Part is located toward the back of the body.
Superior
Part is located above the other, or toward the head.
Inferior
Part is located below the other, or toward the feet.
Medial
Part is nearer than the other part to an imaginary midline.
Lateral
Part is further away from an imaginary midline.
Proximal
Part is closer than another to the point of origin or attachment (arms/legs only)
Distal
Part is further than another from point of origin or attachment (arms/legs only)
Superficial
(External) part is located nearer than another to the surface of the body.
Deep
(Internal) part is located farther than another from the surface of the body.
Central
Part is at the center of a body or an organ.
Peripheral
Part is away from the center of a body or an organ.
Sagittal Plane
(Median) Divides the body into left and right
Frontal Plane
(Coronal) Divides the body into anterior and posterior.
Transverse Plane
(Horizontal) Produces a horizontal cross section.
Anatomy
The structure of the parts of the human body.
Integumentary system
External support and protection, body temperature maintenance
Skeletal system
Internal support and protection, blood cell production.
Muscular system
Movement and heat production.
Nervous system
Regulatory centers to control all body systems; learning and memory.
Endocrine system
Hormone secretion for chemical regulation of body systems.
Cardiovascular/Blood system
Nutrient transport TO cells; waste transport FROM cells.
Lymphatic/immunity
Tissue fluid drainage and purification, fights pathogens.
Respiratory system
Maintains blood pH, supplies blood with oxygen and removes blood carbon dioxide.
Digestive system
Breakdown of food, absorption of nutrients to blood.
Urinary system
Maintenance of volume/chemical composition of blood.
Reproductive system
Production of sperm and eggs; transfer of sperm to female system for development.
