Workbook and Worksheet Organization
Work done in excel is performed in a workbook file.
Each workbook file has its own window.
Workbooks are broken down into work sheets.
Each worksheet is made up of individual cells.

Cloud Storage - Documents can be stored in SkyDrive.
Worksheet Organization
- Worksheets consist of rows and columns
- There are 1048576 rows.
- Colums range from A to XFD.
- The intersection between a row and column represents one cell.
- Each cell has a unique address make up of its column letter and row number.
- At any given time, one cell is the active cell.
Draw Layer
Worksheets have an invisiable layer called the draw layer.
The draw layer holds charts, images and diagrams.
The Ribbon
In Office 2007, the traditional menu was changed to the ribbon.
The ribbon is a collection of icons on the top of the screen.
The words above the icons are known as tabs.
The ribbon is cusomizable and tends to be easier to use.
The ribbon can be hidden by pressing Ctrl+F1.

Types of commands on the Ribbon
When you hover you mouse over a command, you will see a pop up box that displays the commands name.
There are several different types of commands:
Simple buttons: Click the button and it does something. (ie increase font).
Toggle buttons: Clickable button that conveys information by displaying two colors. Example is the bold button.
Simple drop downs: If a command has a small down arrow, the command is a drop down. If you clip on it, additional commands will appear.
Split button: Combines the one click button with drop down. If you click the button part, the command is exectued. If you click the drop down arrow, you can choose from a list of related commands
Ribbon groups can also contain a small icon in the bottom right corner known as a Dialog Box Launcher. These provide options that are not available in the ribbon.
Keyboard Shortcuts for Moving Around a Spreadsheet
- Up Arrow: Moves the active cell up one row
- Down Arrow: Moves the active cell down one row.
- Left Arrow: Moves the active cell one column left.
- Right Arrow: Moves the active cell one column right.
- Tab: Move Active cell to the right.
- PgUp: Move up one cell.
- PdDn: Move down one cell.
- Alt+PgDN: Move active cell right one screen.
- Alt+PgUp: Move active cell left one screen.
- Ctrl+Backspace: Scrolls screen so that the active cell is visable.
Contextual tabs
- Excel also includes contextual tabs.
- When an object (like a chart) is selected, specfic tools for working with that object appear in the ribbon.
Accessing the Ribbon with Your KeyBoard
- Most commands on the ribbon can be accessed by keyboard.
- To see all the commands, press the Alt Key.
Shortcut Menus
- Shortcut menus can be accessed by right clicking on items in Excel.
- The menus contain the most relevant commands to what you are clicking on.
Dialog Boxes
- Excel commands can display a dialog box.
- The dialog box provides excel with a way to get more information from you.
- There are two types of dialog boxes:
- Typical: A modal dialog box. Takes the focus away from the spreadhsset and you need to do something within the box.
- Stay on top: A modeless dialog box. . Works similar to a tool bar.
Task Panes
Task panes appear automaically when you click on certain commands.
By default they are located on the right side of the window.
Home Tab
Main tab. Contains the classic clipboard commands, formatting, style commands, insert delete rows and other editing features.
