Ch1 - Four Types of Measurement Scales Flashcards
nominal scale
consists of a set of categories that have different names
- label and categorize observations, but do not make any quantitive distinctions btw observations
ordinal scale
consists of a set of categories that are organized in an ordered sequence
- ranks observations in terms of size or magnitude
interval scale
consists of ordered categories that are all intervals of exactly the same size
what is reflected in an interval scale?
equal differences btw numbers on scale reflects equal differences in magnitude
zero point in an interval scale
Arbitrary and does not indicate a zero amount of variable being measured
ratio scale
an interval scale with the additional feature of an absolute zero point
what is reflected in a ratio scale?
ratios of numbers reflect ratios of magnitude
