Ch.1 Anatomical Position and Body Regions Flashcards
How can the anatomical position be defined as?
Body upright, arms at side, palms forward.
Define superior (cranial)
toward the head end or upper part of body
Define inferior (caudal)
away from the head end or toward the lower part of the body
Define anterior (ventral)
Toward the front or belly side
Define posterior (dorsal)
Toward the back
defineMedial
Toward the midline - line the extends vertically down the middle
Define Lateral
Away from the midline
Define superficial (external)
Toward the surface of the body
Define deep (internal)
away from the surface of the body
Define proximal
Toward a structure’s origin or point of attachment to the trunk
Define Distal
Away from a structures origin or point of attachment to the trunk
What are the two main cavities in the human body?
Dorsal and Ventral cavities
Where is the dorsal cavity loacted?
the posterior (dorsal) side of the body
What does the dorsal cavity contain?
The cranial cavity (houses the brain)
The vertebral cavity (houses the spinal cord)
What does the Ventral Cavity include?
The Thoracic cavity (contains the heart, lungs, and major vessels of the heart.)
The Abdominopelvic cavity (contains the stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, small intestine, kidneys, and part of the large intestine.
What are serous membranes?
Membranes that line the inside walls of ventral cavities
Serous membranes consist of 2 layers, what are they?
The outer layer - parietal layer
The inner layer that adheres to the organ - the visceral layer
What is the serous membrane associated with the heart?
Pericardium
The serous membrane associated with the lungs
pleura
The serous membrane associated with the abdominal organs?
peritoneum
the heart lies in the___
ventral pericardium
