Ch.1 Flashcards
Double safety check
- Buddy system
- Touch system
Safety Goal:
To remove the subject as quickly as possible with minimum risk to rescuer and victim
SUDOT
1 blast- Stop 2 blasts-Up rope 3 blasts-Down rope 4 blasts-Off rope 5 blasts- Trouble/Help
How close to the edge should you tie in?
Tie in within 10 feet from the edge when working.
Shock Load
The resulting force when a mass is transferred to the system in a catastrophic manner
Whistle test
- determines what the system will do if all operators let go at the same time
- the load should not fall, and shock load to the system is minimal
Static Kernmantle Rope
Ropes with a core (kern) and a sheath (mantle) are the most commonly used as today’s rescue rope .
Benefits of static kernmantle rope
- high abrasion resistance
- ease of handling
Nearly 100% of the load is carried by the:
Core fibers, which are protected by the sheath
1kN=
220lbs.
Disadvantages of static nylon kernmantle rope:
May lose 10-15% of the strength when wet or acid
11mm
28kN
12.5mm
42kN
Tensile strength
The amount of force a rope will hold before it breaks
What is the weakest part of a knotted rope?
The point where the standing end enters the knot
