CH1 Flashcards
What is regional anatomy?
Study of all structures (muscle, bones, blood vessels, etc) in a region of the body simultaneously
What is systemic anatomy?
When body structure is studied system by system
What is surface anatomy?
Study of internal structures in relation to overlaying skin surface (muscle bulging out of skin, collarbone, etc)
Why does physiology focus on the body at a molecular level?
Body’s abilities ultimately depend on the chemical reactions that go on within them
What is cytology?
The study of cells (anatomically)
What is histology?
Study of tissue
What is developmental anatomy?
Study of structural changes that occur throughout a lifetime
What is embryology?
Subdivision of development anatomy that focuses on development before birth
What is complementarity of structure and function?
The idea that anatomy and physiology are inseparable of one another. When studying one you are simultaneously studying the other
Name each level of organization
Chemical, cellular, tissue, organ, organ system, organismal
What does the chemical level of organization do?
Atoms to molecules
What does the chemical level of organization do?
Molecules form cells
What does the tissue level of organization do?
Cells form tissue
What is the organ level of organization?
Tissue forms organs (2-4 different tissue types most commonly)
What is the organ system level of organization?
Organs forming systems working together to form a system
What is the organismal level of organization?
An organism is made up of many organ systems
What are the 4 main types of tissue?
Epithelial, muscle, connective, and nervous
What does epithelial tissue do?
Covers body surface and lines its cavities
What does muscle tissue do?
Provides movement
What does connective tissue do?
Supports and protects organs
What does nervous tissue do?
Provides means of rapid internal communication via electrical pulses to signal other tissue to react accordingly
What is an organ?
Discrete structure composed of 2+ (4 more commonly) tissue types that performs a specific bodily function
Why are all body cells interdependent?
Due to being multicellular, our vital bodily functions are parceled out among different organ systems
