ch1 Flashcards
What is flash memory?
A very fast, non-volatile, permanent storage that can be read and written to very quickly.
What is the difference between volatile and non-volatile memory?
Non-volatile memory of a computer is saved even when power is turned off while volatile memory would lose all information once power is turned off.
What is EEPROM?
Electronically erasable programmable read-only memory.
A BIOS chip is stored using what kind of memory?
Flash memory. This helps the computer start within seconds.
What is the building block of Flash memory?
FGMOS (Floating Gate MOSFETs)
What are the two logic gates that could be used in manufacturing flash memory?
NOR flash and NAND flash
What is VLSI?
Very large-scale integration. It is used to describe most integrated circuits from the 1980s onward.
What happens to the replaced silicon atom while doping? It doesn’t just vanish, right?
Which type of doping is used to increase conductivity, and why?
n-type and p-type doping increase conductivity
What is the junction between a n-type and p-type silicon called?
Diode
Which typed of doping is used in the anode and cathode?
Cathode is n-type doped. Anode is p-type doped.
When is a diode forward biased in terms of voltage?
A diode is forward biased when the p-type semiconductor (anode) is at higher voltage than the n-type semiconductor (cathode). Thus current flows.
When is a diode reverse biased in terms of voltage?
A diode is reverse biased when the voltage of the p-type semiconductor (anode) is less than or equal to the voltage of the n-type semiconductor (cathode). Thus very little current flows.
What does the “substrate” refer to in a MOS?
The bulk of Silicon.
What is an nMOS transistor made of?
An nMOS transistor consists of a p-type substrate with n-type drain and source.
