Ch. 9: Substitution and Elimination Reactions of Alkyl Halides Flashcards
What kind of elements can undergo substitution and/or elimination reactions?
The families of group 2 on the periodic table, they all have an electronegative atom or an electron-withdrawing group attached to a sp3 carbon
What is a substitution reaction?
the electronegative atom or electron-withdrawing group is replaced by another atom or group
What is an elimination reaction?
the electronegative atom or electron-withdrawing group is eliminated, along with a hydrogen atom from an adjacent carbon
What order reaction is a nucleophilic substitution reaction?
a second order, the rate depends linearly on the concentration of each of the two reactants
What does SN2 mean?
S=substitution
N=nucleophilic
2=bimolecular
As the alkyl group of an SN2 reaction get larger, what happens to the rate of the substitution reaction with a given nucleophile
the rate of the sub rxn with a given nucleophile decreases
