Anorexia Nervosa
DSM-V criteria
- refusing to maintain weight at or above normal for one’s age and height. (15% below normal).
- symptoms present for at least 3 mo,
- Disturbed perception of body image,
- anxiety,
- amenorrhea (lack of 3 menstrual cycle)
Types of Anorexia
Restricting: gradually cutting back on food intake to 600-800 cal/day, diet does not vary
Binge/purging: forcing to self vomit or using laxatives and diuretics to lose weight
Eating disorder not specified: those that meet all but one of the diagnostic criteria for anorexia
Who has anorexia?
90-95% of cases are adolescent girls and young women with peaks at 14-20 yo
4% develop full disorder
Dieting follows a stressful event and loss of weight was a reward
2-6% die from medical problems related to starvation or suicide
medical problems of a person with anorexia
Amenorrhea with Low body temperature and blood pressure
Skin may dry
hands and feet are cold (blue hinge)
nails become brittle and hair may fall out.
Lanugo(fine hair) may cover the body
Congestive heart failure
metabolic and electrolyte imbalances –> cardiac arrest or circulatory collapse
Cognitive and personality/mood problems of people with anorexia
Cognitive: low opinion of their body and physical appearance–>distorted body image. Perfectionist at self control
personality/mood: preoccupation with food, mildly depressed with low self esteem, poor concentration, insomniacs, and obsessive compulsive.
