ch 9 and 14 Flashcards
aquifers
small spaces found within permeable layers of rock and sediment where groundwater is found
unconfined aquifers
aquifer that is simply porous rock covered by soil out of which water can easily flow
confined aquifers
an aquifer surrounded by a layer of impermeable rock or clay that impedes water flow
water table
uppermost level at which the water in an area fully saturates the rock or soil
recharge
the input process of water percolating into an aquifer
springs
water from an aquifer that naturally percolates up to the surface
artesian wells
drill a hole into a confined aquifer
cone of depression
area where there is no longer any groundwater
saltwater intrusion
lowering the water table reduces water pressure in the aquifer, allowing the nearby salt water to move into the aquifer
floodplain
land adjacent to a river; gets flooded normally; provide a water supply and very fertile soils
oligotrophic
low amounts of nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen
mesotrophic
moderate level of productivity
eutrophic
high levels of productivity
impermeable surfaces
pavement or surface that is paved over and water cannot permeate through
levees
bank built up on either side of a river to prevent flooding
dikes
structure to prevent ocean flooding
dam
most built for flood control, electricity and recreation
reservoir
the area where water is stored behind the dam
fish ladder
a stair-like structure that allows migrating fish to get around a dam (another option is salmon cannon)
aqueducts
canals or ditches used to carry water from one location to another
desalinization
removing salt from the water
