Pygmalion made a statue of ivory, white as snow, more beauty than any other and then fell in love with his making. He kissed it and pretended it was real. He prayed to the gods that she would be. Venus made it happen. Pygmalions wife gave birth to Paphos.
Galatea is the name given to pygmalions beloved in later versions.
