CH 8; Ionic Compounds Flashcards
What is a chemical bond?
The force that holds two atoms together
What is the Octet rule?
Atoms will gain/lose/share valance electrons to obtain a full octet (8)
Valence electron sharing
If the atom gains electrons, it has a negative charge, if it loses electrons, it has a positive charge
what is an ionic bond?
the electrostatic force that holds oppositley charged particles together in an ionic compound
Properties of ionic compounds
HIgh melting point, High boiling point, solid (at room temperature), hard, rigid, brittle
Properties of ionic compounds (pt 2)
ions always have a charge, electrolytes = conductors, E.N. > 1.70, Lattice energy
Formula unit (for ionic compounds)
the simplest ration of the ions represented in an ionic compound
Oxdation number
the charge of a monomatomic ion (a one atom ion)
Writing formulas for Ionic compounds
1: write the Cation symbol wth its charge
2: Write the anion sybol with its charge
3: criss cross method, (swap the charges)
4: final answer- dont write the ones, reduce to simplest ratio, use parenthesis with polyatomic ions
What is a substitutional alloy?
A metallic substance assembled in a lattice of one metal with a secondary and/or tertiary metal of a similar radius exchanged within the original lattice
difference between substitutional and intersitial alloys
Interstitial alloys have smaller atoms that fit into gaps between larger atoms, while substitutional alloys have similar-sized atoms that replace each other in the crystal lattice.
What is an interstisial alloy?
A metallic substance with small atoms filling the spaces between the larger metal lattice.
What is an alloy?
A metallic substance that is composed of two or more different atoms. Interstitial Alloy
VOCAB: Cation
An ion that has a positive charge
VOCAB: Electrion sea model
proposes that all metal atoms in a metallic solid contribute their valence electrions to form a “sea” of electrons
