Ch. 8 Fire protection Flashcards

1
Q

What happens when you ARM the Cargo fire ARM switches?

A
  1. Arms all cargo fire extinguisher bottles
  2. Arms the selected compartment extinguisher valve
  3. Turns off both lower recirculation fans
  4. Shuts down cargo heat
  5. Commands the packs to provide the minimum air flow required to provide pressurization
  6. Shuts down the bulk cargo compartment ventilation system operation (aft cargo fire only)
  7. Shuts down the lavatory/galley vent fan (aft cargo fire only)
  8. Puts associated (fwd or aft) equipment cooling system into the override mode
  9. Turns off miscellaneous equipment cooling fan (forward cargo fire only)
  10. Shuts off in-flight entertainment equipment cooling
  11. Turns off Nitrogen generation system
  12. Shuts off door 4 galley chiller units (aft cargo fire only)
  13. Outflow valves move to 50/50 flow split for air flow stability
  14. Turns off zonal dryer fans

Q

How long does it take for the APU extinguisher bottle to discharge automatically after an APU fire?

A

An APU fire signal causes the APU to shutdown immediately. The APU extinguisher bottle is automatically discharged after a 15 second delay to allow time for the fuel valve to close.

Q

How many cargo fire extinguisher bottles are installed for cargo compartment fire extinguishing?

A

There are either 5 or 6 fire extinguisher bottles installed depending on the configuration.

In flight, a fire warning from the cargo fire detection system causes the immediate discharge of 2 extinguisher bottles into the affected compartment. After a 15 mins delay, the remaining 3 (or 4 with 6 bottles installed) discharge at a reduced flow rate into the affected compartment.

If the airplane lands within 15 min, one of the remaining bottles discharges at the reduced rate on touchdown.

On the ground. When the CARGO FIRE DISCHARGE switch is pushed, 3 extinguisher bottles are simultaneously discharged into the selected compartment, with the 3rd bottle discharging at a reduced flow rate.

Q

What indications are there for a lavatory fire?

A

Each lavatory has a single smoke detector.

If smoke is detected an aural alert sounds in the lavatory and in the cabin. In addition, the lavatory call light flashes and the master light at the associated attendant station illuminates.
EICAS message SMOKE LAVATORY is displayed.

17
Q

What is the fire protection system that is different between in FLT and on GND?
(AOM 8.20.6)

A

A. Cargo Compartment Fire Extinguishing.
B. *In flight, a fire warning from the cargo fire detection system causes the immediate
total
Discharge of two extinguisher bottles into the affected compartment. After 15 min.
Time
Delay, the remaining three extinguisher bottles discharge at a reduced flow rate into
the
Compartment.
*On the ground, if a Cargo Fire Discharge switch is pushed, three extinguisher
bottles
discharge simultaneously into the selected compartment, with the third bottle
Discharging at a reduced flow rate.
