Ch. 8 Fire protection Flashcards
What happens when you ARM the Cargo fire ARM switches?
- Arms all cargo fire extinguisher bottles
- Arms the selected compartment extinguisher valve
- Turns off both lower recirculation fans
- Shuts down cargo heat
- Commands the packs to provide the minimum air flow required to provide pressurization
- Shuts down the bulk cargo compartment ventilation system operation (aft cargo fire only)
- Shuts down the lavatory/galley vent fan (aft cargo fire only)
- Puts associated (fwd or aft) equipment cooling system into the override mode
- Turns off miscellaneous equipment cooling fan (forward cargo fire only)
- Shuts off in-flight entertainment equipment cooling
- Turns off Nitrogen generation system
- Shuts off door 4 galley chiller units (aft cargo fire only)
- Outflow valves move to 50/50 flow split for air flow stability
- Turns off zonal dryer fans
AOM 8.10.4
How long does it take for the APU extinguisher bottle to discharge automatically after an APU fire?
An APU fire signal causes the APU to shutdown immediately. The APU extinguisher bottle is automatically discharged after a 15 second delay to allow time for the fuel valve to close.
AOM 8.20.4
How many cargo fire extinguisher bottles are installed for cargo compartment fire extinguishing?
There are either 5 or 6 fire extinguisher bottles installed depending on the configuration.
In flight, a fire warning from the cargo fire detection system causes the immediate discharge of 2 extinguisher bottles into the affected compartment. After a 15 mins delay, the remaining 3 (or 4 with 6 bottles installed) discharge at a reduced flow rate into the affected compartment.
If the airplane lands within 15 min, one of the remaining bottles discharges at the reduced rate on touchdown.
On the ground. When the CARGO FIRE DISCHARGE switch is pushed, 3 extinguisher bottles are simultaneously discharged into the selected compartment, with the 3rd bottle discharging at a reduced flow rate.
AOM 8.20.6
What indications are there for a lavatory fire?
Each lavatory has a single smoke detector.
If smoke is detected an aural alert sounds in the lavatory and in the cabin. In addition, the lavatory call light flashes and the master light at the associated attendant station illuminates.
EICAS message SMOKE LAVATORY is displayed.
AOM 8.20.7
Is there an indication in the cockpit for the discharge of the lavatory fire extinguisher bottle?
No. Extinguisher operation is automatic.
During preflight, you notice the BOTTLE DISCH APU message displayed on EICAS. What does this mean?
The APU fire bottle pressure is low.
During preflight, you notice the BOTTLER 1 DISCH ENG message displayed on EICAS. What does this mean?
Fire bottle 1 has discharged or pressure is low.
What action should you take if the switch remains locked after a fire is detected?
Push the fire override switch, then pull the fire switch.
When inflight, and a fire is sensed, the CARGO FIRE protection system automatically discharges two bottles immediately. The remaining metered bottles discharge _____ minutes later.
15
The FIRE CARGO FWD/AFT warning message is likely to remain after the fire is extinguished due to smoke in the cargo compartment.
TRUE of FALSE
TRUE
In regards to the hydraulic system, pulling an engine fire handle:
A. Will shut off fluid to the associated pump.
B. Depressurizes the engine driven pump.
C. Removes power from the thrust reverser isolation valve.
Failure of a single channel of an engine fire detection assembly will:
Cause the system to switch to a single channel operation.
Placing the FWD cargo fire arm switch in the ARM position will:
Put the equipment cooling system into the OVERIDE mode.
How many fire distinguisher bottles are there for the APU?
1
Where is the fire extinguisher located in the lavatory?
Each lavatory has a fire extinguisher located beneath the sink area.
