CH 8 & 9 Test Flashcards
What is magnetism?
Attraction of an object for iron and is exhibited by a permanent magnet or an electric magnet
What is induced magnetism?
Created when a piece of iron is placed in a magnetic field. The closer the object is to the magnet, the stronger the magnetic field is.
When is a magnetic field stronger?
When the object is closer to the magnet.
What are magnetic lines of force?
Invisible lines that represent the direction and strength of a magnetic field
What is magnetic flux?
Lines of force of a magnet that flow between the north and south poles
South Pole of magnet to the North Pole of magnet do what?
Attract
Magnetism can only be induced by the earths core. (True or false)
False
A permanent magnet is a piece of magnetic material that can hold its magnetic strength. (True or false)
True
What are the two types of magnets?
Permanent magnet and electromagnet
Magnets have 3 poles. (True or False)
False
What is an electromagnet?
Magnet produced through electricity
A brushless DC motor with a 3 phase winding is?
ECM
Alternating current motor speed is determined by?
The frequency of power supply only
How do electric motors work?
Electric energy is changed to mechanical energy by magnetism, which causes motor to turn.
To make an electric motor work continuously the magnetic field must rotate. (True or false)
True
