assess: texture, temp, moisture, organ size and location, swelling, tenderness, presence of masses
should be performed slow and systematic
start with light and proceed to deep

characteristics of sounds
amplitude - intensity pitch - frequency quality - timbre duration - length of time strucure with more air produces louder, deeper sound compared with denser structure
auscultation
listening to sounds produced by body
does not amplify sound, just blocks other sounds out
bell - small side for soft pitched sounds
diaphragm - big side for higher pitched sound (heart, lung, belly)
don’t listen through pt gown or clothing
don’t listen over body hair
standard equipment
have all necessary equipment (vs, stethoscope, BP cuff, etc.)
hand hygiene, gloves
start to fin
