CH 7 Flashcards
Network
2 or more computers that are connected via software and hardware so they can communicate with each other
Node
A device connected to a network
Ex: printer, game console
Network Administration
Involves tasks such as: installing new computers/devices, monitoring the network, updating and installing new software on the network, configuring security for a network.
Data Transfer Rate
(Also called bandwidth)- is the maximum speed at which data can be transmitted between 2 nodes on a network.
Throughput
The actual speed of data transfer that is achieved. Measured in Mbps or Gbps
PAN
Personal area network: used for communication among devices close to one person. Ex: Smartphones and tablets using BT and wifi.
LAN
Local Area Network: a network in which the nodes are located within a small geographical area. Ex: a network in a computer lab or in a fast food restaurant
HAN
Home Area Network: A specific type of LAN located in a home
MAN
Metropolitan Area Network: A large network designed to provide access to a specific geographical area, such as an entire city
WAN
Wide Area Network: spans a large physical distance. The internet is the largest WAN, covering the globe
Backward Compatibility
The ability of current devices to use earlier standards in addition to the current standard
Transmission Media
Establishes a communications channel between the nodes on a network
Unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) Cable
Composed of 4 pairs of wires twisted around each other to reduce electrical interference
twisted-pair cable
used for telephone cable, made up of copper wires that are twisted around each other & surrounded by a plastic jacket
Coaxial Cable
A single copper wire surrounded by layers of plastic. Ex: cable for cable TV
