Ch 7 Flashcards
Basic unit of all forms of life
Cell
Cell theory
All living things are made up of cells, cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things, new cells are produced from living cells
Thin flexible barrier that surrounds all cells; regulates what enters and exits the cell
Cell membrane
E center of an atom, which contains neutrons and protons; in cells, the struct that contains the cells genetic material in the form of DNA
Nucleus
Eukaryotes
Units which cells contain a nucleus
Unicellular organism that lacks a nucleus
Prokaryote
Looked at a slice of cork, came up w the name cells
Robert Cooke
Pond water, bacteria; cells basic unit of life
Anton van Leeuwenhoek
All plants are made of cells
Matthias schledian
All animals are made up of cells
Theodor Schwann
New cells can be produced only from existing cells
Rudolf Virchow
In eukaryotic cells, everything outside the nucleus; in prokaryotic cells, everything
Cytoplasm
Specialized structure that performs important cellular functions within a cell
Organelle
Cell organelle that stores materials such as water, salts , proteins and carbs
Vacuole
Cell organelle that breaks down lipids, carbs, and proteins into small molecules that can be used by the rest of the cell
Lysosomes
Network of protein filaments in a eukaryotic cell that gives the cell it’s shape and internal organization and is involved in movement
Cytoskeleton
Structure in an animal cell that helps to organize cell division
Centriole
Cell organelle consisting of RNA and protein found throughout the cytoplasm in a cell; the sight of protein synthesis
Ribosome
Internal membrane system found in the eukaryotic cell; place where lipid components of the cell membrane or assembled.
Endoplasmic reticulum
Organelle in cell that modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and other materials from them ER for storage in the cell or release outside the cell
Golgi apparatus
Organelles found in plants and some other organisms that catches the energy from sunlight and converts it into chemical energy
Chloroplast
Cell organelle that converts chemical energy stored in foods into compounds that are more convenient for the cell to use
Mitochondria
Strong supporting layer around the cell membrane in some cells
Cell wall
Flexible double layered sheet that makes up the cell membrane and forms a barrier between the cell and its surroundings
Lipid bilayer
