Alkalosis
Increase in blood pH. Greater than 7.45
Acidosis
Blood pH decreases to less than 7.35.
Blood stream is acidic.
Anterior
Front side
Ascites
Fluid accumulation in the peritoneal cavity.
Body planes
Imaginary dividing lines of the body that serve as reference points for describing distance from or proximity to the body.
Sagittarius, frontal, transverse, and medial planes.
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
Fluid that surrounds the brain and meninges within the spinal column.
Digestive system
Mouth, teeth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, intestines, salivary glands, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, appendix
Function: digestion, absorption, elimination
Disorders: pancreatitis, hepatitis, periodontal disease, stomach disorders ( ulcers, acid reflux, hernias) intestinal disorders- appendicitis
Test: blood test, feces, microbial cultures, parasitic analysis

Distal
Distant/away from point if attachment
Dorsal
Surface region of body characterized by the posterior area and including spinal and cranial cavities.
The dorsal side of the shoulder.
Endocrine glands
Ductless glands.
Release secretions directly into the bloodstream.
Hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid,thymus, adrenal glands
Exocrine glands
Secrete fluids through channels or ducts.
Ex: sweat, saliva, mucus
Frontal plane
Imaginary line running lengthwise on the body from side to side.
Divides body into anterior and posterior.
GI system
Breaks down food chemically and physically into nutrients
Hematology
Study of blood and blood forming tissues
Hematopoeisis.
Blood cell formation in bone marrow.
Hemoglobin
Molecules that carry oxygen and CO2 in RBCs
Integumentary system
Parts: Skin, hair, sweat and oil glands, teeth, and fingernails.
Function: Protective and regulatory functions
Disorders: infections, cancers
Tests: skin scrapings, biopsy, KOH prep
Lateral
Toward the sides if the body.
The hip is lateral to the navel.
Medial
Toward midline of the body.
The heart is medial to the right shoulder.
Metabolic acidosis
Pathological condition that occurs when kidneys cannot eliminate acidic substances.
Kidney failure
Metabolic alkalosis
Pathologic condition that results from excessive vomiting or abnormal secretion of certain hormones that cause excess elimination of hydrogen ions
Muscular system
Skeletal, visceral, cardiac muscles
Function: movement, posture, produce heat
Disorder: muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, tendinitis, infections
Test: muscle enzyme- creatine, phosphokinase, lactate dehydrogenase
