What is cystitis?
Collective term to describe urinary symptoms - dysuria, frequency and urgency
Urine could be cloudy and strong smelling - may be signs of bacterial infection
Name the common bacterial causes of infection (3)
E.coli
Staph. saprophyticus
Proteus Mirabilis
Why is cystitis more common in women than in men?
- Much shorter urethra - passage of bacteria easier. Process facilitated by sexual intercourse.
- Evidence that prostatic fluid has antibacterial properties.
When to refer? (9)
Men, Children Fever, nausea/vomiting Loin pain or tenderness Haematuria Vaginal discharge Longer than 2 days Pregnancy Recurrent cystitis Failed medication
What are the management options?
Pain relief - paracetamol, ibuprofen for 2 days
Potassium and sodium citrate = makes urine alkaline
Which type of patients is potassium citrate contraindicated in?
Taking:
Potassium-sparing diuretics
Aldosterone antagonists
ACE inhibitors
Which type of patients is sodium citrate contraindicated in?
Hypertensive patients
Heart disease
Pregnant
