What is cystitis?

A

Collective term to describe urinary symptoms - dysuria, frequency and urgency
Urine could be cloudy and strong smelling - may be signs of bacterial infection

Why is cystitis more common in women than in men?

A
  1. Much shorter urethra - passage of bacteria easier. Process facilitated by sexual intercourse.
  2. Evidence that prostatic fluid has antibacterial properties.

A

Pain relief - paracetamol, ibuprofen for 2 days

Potassium and sodium citrate = makes urine alkaline
