Ch 5 Membrane Dynamics Flashcards
Disequilibrium of fluids
Uneven distribution of solutes in body fluids.
Electrical disequilibrium
Many body solutes are ions. Negative ions in intercellular fluid an positive in extra cellular fluids.
Goal of homeostasis
Maintain a dynamic steady state . Not the same as equilibrium
Intracellular fluid
Extra cellular fluid
2/3 of total body water.
1/3
Osmosis
Water moves to dilute the more concentrated solution
Osmolarity
Molarity• number of particles
Normal osmolality
280-290 milliosmols per liter
Tonicity
Describes how that solution would affect cell volume if the cell were placed in the solution and allowed to come to equilibrium
Diffusion
Movement of molecules from high to low concentrations
Diffusion charistics
1) passive process
2) move from high to low concentration
3) net movement occurs until equal everywhere
4) diffusion is rapid over short distance , much slower over long
5) directly proportional to temp
6) inversely proportional to molecule weight and size
Membrane protein 4 major functions
Structural
Enzymes
Receptors
Transporters
Primary active transport
Uses ATP to move again gradient
Secondary active transport
Uses potential energy stored in concentration gradient of one molecule to move other molecules against their gradient
Flicks law of diffusion
Rate is proportional to Surface area Concentration gradient Permeability Thickness
Symport
Anti port
More than one substance same direction
Two substances different direction
