Ch. 5 Interconnecting LANs Flashcards
THE NETWORK BRIDGE
- A networking device that uses the MAC address to forward data and interconnect two LANs and seperate network segments * incompatable
- Only data that is needed is to be sent across the bridge to the adjacent network segment is fowarded
ARP
ADDRESS RESOLUTION PROTOCOL
protocol used to map an IP address to its MAC address
A broadcast is sent to all host in the LAN connected to the bridge
ARP CACHE
A TEMPORARY STORAGE OF MAC ADDRESSES RECENTLY CONTACTED
ALSO CALLED ARP TABLE
HOLDS THE ADDRESS OF A HOSTT, AND ENABLES THE MESSAGE TO BE SENT DIRECTLY TO THE DESTINATION MAC ADDRESS WITHOUT THE COMP HAVING TO ISSUE AN ARP REQUEST
TRANSLATION BRIDGE
USED TO INTERCONNECT TWO LANs THAT ARE OPERATING TWO DIFFERENT NETWORKING PROTOCOLS
Incompatable networks
LAYER 2 SWITCH
IMPROVED NETWORK TECHNOLOGY THA PROVIDES A DIRECT DATA CONNECTION FOR NETWORK DEVICES IN LAN
MINIMIZING DATA COLLISIONS, AMD MAXIMIZING THE USE OF A LAN’S BANDWITH
HAS MULTIPLE PORTS SIMILAR TO THE HUB SIMILAR TO THE HUB AND CAN SWITCH IN A DATA CONNECTION FROM ANY PORT TO ANY OTHER PORT SIMILAR TO THE BRIDGE
MULTIPORT SWITCH
ANOTHER NAME FOR LAYER 2 SWITCH
PING COMMAND
USED TO VERIFY THAT A NETWORK CONNECTION EXISTS BETWEEN TWO COMPUTERS.
cCOMMAND FORMAT IS:
PING (IP ADDRESS) { FOR THIS EXAMPLE ping 10.10.10.3}
A series of echo request and replies are issued by the networking device to test the time it takes the data to pass through the link
Requires a MAC address so a ARP request is sent before connection is established
MANAGED SWITCH
ALLOWS THENETWORK ADMIN TO MONITOR, CONFIGURE, AND MANAGE SELECT NETWORK FEATURES
PASSWORD PROTECTED
DYNAMIC ASSIGNMENT
MEANS THAT THE MAC ADDRESS WAS ASSIGNED TO A PORT WHEN A HOST WAS CONNECTED
STATIC ADDRESSING
INDICATES THAT THE MAC ADDRESS HAS BEEN MANUALLY ASSIGNED TO AN INTERFACE, AND THE PORT ASSIGNMENT DOES NOT EXPIRE
USING A MAC ADDRESS
IS USEING A STATIC ADDRESS
FLOODING
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A SWITCH DOSEN’T HAVE THE DESTINATION MAC ADDRESS STORED IN CAM
*DENIAL OF SERVICE
ENTERPRISE NETWORK
NETWORK USED BY A LARGE COMPANY
GREAT EFFORT TO MAKE ALL CONNECTIONS EASY
**CONNECTIVITY
GATEWAY
NETWORK DEVICE THAT ENABLES HOST IN A LAN TO CONNECT TO NETWORKS OUTSIDE THE LAN
ROUTING TABLE
KEEPS TRACK OF THE ROUTES TO USE FOR FORWARDING DATA TO ITS DESTINATION
