Ch 5 Flashcards
Measure of system energy that is unable to be converted into work.
Entropy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form to another.
1st Law of Thermodynamics
Law of Conservation of Energy
Heat will spontaneously flow from a hot region to a cold region.
Cannot extract more work from a system than the quantity of available energy present.
Available energy present is less than the total energy present unless a temperature of absolute zero can be attained.
*the essence of the 2nd law is that when heat is used to do work, the heat is never entirely converted to work. There is always wasted heat.
2nd Law of Thermodynamics
Device that converts thermal energy to other forms of energy such as mechanical or electrical.
