ch-5 Flashcards
what is biodiversity
the relation between biotic and abiotic components and their interaction
what are the reasons for loss in biodiversity
deforestation,natural calamities,climate change
what is deforestation
deforestation is the clearing of forest land for other purposes
what are the causes of deforestation
cutting trees to feed the growing population, use wood for making furniture, paper, etc, using it as fuel, etc
what are the consequences of deforestation
increase in global warming,decrease in O2 levels,droughts,desertification,
infiltration of soil, homelessness of animals, infertility of soil, soil erosion
what is desertification
it is when over a period of time the fertile land gets converted into deserts
what is soil erosion
soil erosion is when the topsoil of the land gets washed away
what are natural calamities
natural disasters and environmental disasters caused by geological and meteorological events.eg:earthquake,
floods,tsunamis
what are the effects of natural calamities
these destroy the niche of many species and also take the life of many species
what are the effects of climate change on biodiversity
increase in pollution results in global warming which is melting ice caps,
which is results in increase in sea level which causes floods. because of this the species cannot survive and are now depleting
how can we conserve our biodiversity
reforestation, protection from forest fires, pests, insects, minimum use of timer/wood as fuel, excessive grazing should be prohibited, conservation of paper, boycotting animal material, strict rules should be
made against poaching animals, protected area like biosphere reserves, national parks, wildlife santuries should be made
