Ch 5 Flashcards
Partial fractions
To express a single rational expression as a sum of two or more rational fractions, which are called partial fractions
Conditional equation
Equation in which two algebraic expressions are equal for particular values of the variable
E.g, 2x=3 is true only if x=3/2
Identity
It is an equation that holds good for all values of the variable.
E.g, ax+bx≡(a+b)x
Rational fraction
The quotient of two polynomials (px/qx) where q(x)≠0, with no common factors, is called rational fraction
Proper rational fractions
If the degree of the polynomial in the numerator is less than the degree of polynomial in denominator
Improper rational fractions
If the degree of the polynomial in the numerator is greater than or equal to the degree of polynomial in denominator
