The descriptions of different types of maps
Climate, Economic, Political, Physical, Thematic
Thematic map
area’s pattern of a specific theme. Temperature of an area
physical map
used for locating natural features. Mountains and forests
political map
boundaries only seen on a map. state lines
economic map
natural resources present in an area. Uses colors to show different farming (agricultural) products in areas.
climate map
show the climate in an area. snow an area receives each year or number of cloudy days.
globes
a 3D model of the Earth
maps
a picture of a place, usually flat that shows you where things are.
aerial photograph
a picture taken from above
satellite images
a picture taken from space
latitude
goes from east to west parallel to the equator 90 degrees
longitude
runs north to south parallel to the prime meridian. 180 degrees
absolute location
the exact point of latitude and longitude. (ex. Dublin library)
relative location
describes a place related to another place (ex. Johnson’s is a 5 minute walk from the library)
cartography
the study of maps
