Ch 5 Flashcards
What is highway hypnosis?
zoning out while driving
Law about driving while tired?
Maggie’s Law and it bans doing that
What is tailgating?
Driving too close to the car in front of you
Explain the one-car-length method:
Drivers should be about one-car-length back for each 10 mph of speed, so cars are further apart in faster areas
Explain the 3 sec plus rule:
If it takes 3 secs for your vehicle to reach a point that the vehicle ahead just passed, there will be enough distance to make a sudden stop
On poor roads or duing poor weather, should you increase or decrease following distances?
increase
Basic steps for changing lanes and passing:
Look in rearview mirror, glance blindspots, indicate
T or F: increase the 3 sec rule to 4 when on a wet roadway?
true
Explain when & how hydroplaning occurs?
On wet roads going over 35 mph as the car can ride up a film of water
Tires can leave the road surface at speeds of 55 mph
Tips for driving on snow & ice:
let the engine warm up before driving, brake gently and slowly, do not turn or accelerate too fast
Describe the 12 second rule
A driver should look far ahead enough to see things 12 seconds away
What should you do when approaching an intersection?
slow down, look both ways, keep your foot on the brake
Two causes of highway accidents:
going over the speed limit,
driving too fast for the current road conditons
How are construction zones identified to drivers? What happens to fines in a construction zone?
Identified by warning sign or flashing lights about 1/2 mile before the area
Fines are doubled
What happens if a driver turns the ignition off while the vehicle is still moving?
The steering wheel will lock and the driver will lose control of their vehicle
The 3 things a driver can do to avoid or lessen a collision are:
Stop quickly, turn quickly out of the way if you cannot stop, or speed up to avoid collisions to the side or rear
List ways to minimize a collision if it appears unavoidable:
try to hit something moving in the same direction over something not moving, something not moving over something coming towards you head on
never try to hit anything head on! «<glancing blows
for rear collision: prepare to press the brakes to avoid going to any vehicles ahead
When is it required that a driver report a motor vehicle accident?
When it caused injury, vehicle or property damage, or death
Describe what to do: Brake Failure
shift into lower gear
pump brake pedal fast and hard to build enough pressure to stop (use parking brake if that don’t work)
look for a off road place to stop and call for help
Describe what to do: Tire Blowout
hold the wheel firmly and keep going straight
ease off gas pedal instead of braking
vehicle will coast to a stop, head to safe offroad place to call for help
Describe what to do: Power Steering Failure
keep a strong grip on the wheel and pull off the road to call for help
Describe what to do: Headlight Failure
safety head offroad and stop
use headlight or dimmer switches to turn headlights on again, ELSE put on the parking lights, turning signals, or emergency flashers, and call for help
Describe what to do: Gas Pedal Problems
keep eyes on road while shifting to neutral, steer off road area, turn off the engine, and call for help
Describe what to do: Hood Latch Failure
slow down immediately, look above or around the hood to see the road, use lane markings as a guide to pull offroad
