Ch. 46 Notes Flashcards
What is the treatment for soft tissue injuries?
RICE: Rest Ice Compression Elevation
What is a strain?
Soft tissue injury
Occurs when a muscle or tendon is excessively stretched
What does a mild strain cause?
Minimal inflammation
Sweeling
Tenderness
What does a moderate strain cause?
Partial tearing of the muscle or tendon fibers
Pain
Inability to move body part
What happens in the case of the most severe strain?
Muscle or tendon is ruptured with seperation of muscle form muscle, tendon from muscle, or tendon from bone
Severe pain
Disability
What is a sprain?
An excessive stretching of 1 or more ligaments that ususlaly results from a twisting motion
What does a mild sprain involeve?
Tearing of just a few ligamnets fibers
Tenderness
What does a moderate sprain involve?
MOre fibers are torn
Disconfort with activity
What does a severe sprain involve?
Instability of the joint
Requires surgery
Pain
Inflammation
What is a dislocation?
common injury where the endsof bones are forced out of normal position
S&S of dislocation
Severe pain
Lost ROM
Treatment of dislocation
Splint extremity immediately
Ice
Seek help
Do not move extremity
S&S of bursitiis
Achy pain
Stiffness
Burning pain (worsens with activity)
What is carpal tunnel syndrome?
Compression of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel when swelling occurs
What is carpal tunnel caused from?
Swelling from edema, trauma, RA, or RMIs
S&S of carpal tunnel syndrome
Pain Numbness Painful tingling Parestheisas Fine motor deficits Muscle weakness
Treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome
Splint
Meds (asprine, NSAIDs, cortisone)
Surgery may be needed
NI’s for carpal tunnel syndrome
Education on prevention (short breaks) Provide analgesic as provided Routine pre-op and post-op Pre-op: elevate hand and splint Teach to report S&S of neruovascular compromise Assist with ADLs
S&S of neurovascular compromise
Numbness Tiingling Coolness Lack of pulse Pale skin & nailbeds Limited movement
What is a fracture?
Break in a bone
Avulsion
Pice of bone is torn away from the main bone while still attatched to a ligament/tendon
Comminuted fracture
Bone is splintered/shattered into lots of fragemetns
Impacted fracture
Bone is forced to be pushed together; boone pushed into bone
Greenstick fracture
Bone is bent and fractures on the outer arc of bend
Interarticular fracture
Involves bone within a joint
