Civil Liberties
laws that are made to benefit society, fundamental rights and freedoms that individuals possess
Censorship
the suppression of words, images, or ideas that are “offensive,”
Slander
the action of saying false statements that can damage a person’s reputation
Libel
a written false statement that harms someone’s reputation
Probable Cause
a strong reason to think that a person or property was involved with a crime
Indictment
a document handed by a grand jury that charges someone with a crime
Self-Incrimination
giving evidence that could lead to one being found guilty
Due Process
fair treatment and procedural safeguards for people in trial
Eminent Domain
the right of the government to take private property- usually land- for public use
Black codes
laws created after the Civil War that restricted black people from certain jobs, owning property, and limited their rights in various way
Suffrage
the right to vote
Poll tax
money voters must pay before they can vote
