Ch. 4: Pure-Tone Audiometry Flashcards
How is hearing tested
&
what is equipment called?
Audiometer
What is the process of pure tone testing?
- Instuctions
- Place device onto patient (headplugs)
- Present the Sound (Threshold Pattern - down 10, up 5)
Definition of threshold
The patient hears and responds to the soud at least 50% of the time
What frequencies are typically tested?
Typical: 250Hz, 500Hz, 1kHz, 2kHz, 4kHz, 8kHz
Why might additional frequencies (inter-octaves) be tested?
Interoctaves (threshold is > 20 dB): 750Hz, 1.5kHz, 3kHz, 6kHz
What threshold is the cut off for normal?
Adults: 20 dBHL
Children: 15 dBHL

Directions for Testing
- Instructions
- Clinician plays sound
- Raise hand when you hear the sound
- Place device onto patient
Responses from patient (what could they be)?
Raising hands
Pushing a button
Devices used for Testing (Bone and Air)?
AC: Headphones or insert
BC: Bone occilator
Air Bone Gap
> 10 dB between Bone conduction and Ait conduction scores
