Q

What does the width on a sankey diagram represent?

A

When the diagram is drawn, the width of the total energy in must equal the width of the useful energy out and the wasted energy out.

Width A = Width B + Width C

Q

How can you find the efficiency of an appliance using a sankey diagram?

A

If the total energy into the appliance is equal to 100J, the useful energy out is equal to 60J and the wasted energy out is equal to 40J. The the efficiency is 60% because 60J of the energy is useful.

Total energy in = 100J
Useful energy out = 60J
Wasted energy out = 40J

Efficiency = 60%

Q

What is the difference between heat and thermal?

A

Heat is the name given to energy in the process of transfer from one point to another because of the temperature difference between them.
