7 Steps of job costing
- Identify the job
- Identify the direct costs
- Select the cost allocation base
- Match indirect costs to their cost allocation base
- Actual Cost, Normal Costing
- Allocate Overhead Costs to the Job
- Compute Total Job Costs
Journal Entries
Journal Entries are done at each step of production
The purpose is to have a the accounting system closely reflect the actual state of the business
Overhead Costs
Overhead is those costs required to run a business, but which cannot be directly attributed to any specific business activity, product, or service.
Thus, overhead costs do not directly lead to the generation of profits.
3 Methods to adjust over/underapplied Overhead
- Adjusted allocation rate approach
- –all allocations are recalculated using the actual values
- proration approach
- –difference of costs of goods sold and finished goods
- write of approach
- –the difference is simply written off to costs of goods sold
