What is cyanosis.
Oxygen deficiency in the circulatory system, where the hemoglobin turns darker red. This creates a bluish tone to skin that is thin (lips/fingernails)
What are the 5 layers of the epidermis from most superficial to deepest?
Stratum corneum, s. lucidum, s. granulosum, s. spinosum, s. basale
What is carotene?
An orange/yellow pigment that accumulates in dehydrated s. corneum and subcutaneous fat
What is melanin?
A black or brown or yellow pigment formed in melanosomes that give skin its colour by pigmenting keratinocytes
What are the two types of sweat glands?
Apocrine: odorous secretions released into hair follicles; Merocrine: 99% water secretions that are released directly to the skin
What are the layers of the dermis?
Papillary layer: contains loose c.t, capillaries, sensory neurons; Reticular layer: many important things surrounded by irregular c.t.
What is inside the subcutaneous layer?
Adipocytes and loose c.t.
