Ch. 4: force Flashcards
What does inversely proportional mean?
when 2 things are related so that as one becomes larger the other becomes smaller (example: as mass of grocery cart increases, acceleration decreases)
What is it called if one force is pushing more than another?
net worth
What is Newton’s Third law of motion?
Action & Reaction
How much is one newton?
One newton is = to 1/4 or1/5 of a pound.
What is Newton’s first law of motion?
Inertia
What is Inertia?
An object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an outside force.
What is Newton’s Second law of motion?
Force, mass, & acceleration
What is force, mass, and acceleration law of motion tell us?
The acceleration of an object as produced by a net force is directly proportional to the magnitude of the net force. The acceleration of an object is inversely proportional to the mass of the object. Consider a grocery cart being pushed by a student. How hard they are pushing it (directly proportional to acceleration) and mass of the grocery cart (inversely proportional to the mass)
What is action & reaction law of motion tell us?
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
If there are two forces pulling and pushing equally what is it called?
mechanical equilibrium
What is force?
Force is a push or pull that moves something.
What is the unit to measure force?
Force is measured in newtons.
What is Physics?
Physics is the study of the way things work.
