Q

How did English ideas about government and trade affect the colonies?

A
  • What type of gov?
  • what colonies were there?
  • what ideas were there about gov?
  • who ran the colonies?
The English ideas of government and trade affected the colonies because the Magna Carta stated that no free man shall be taken or imprisoned. A lot of the colonies had rights like the bill of rights which lists freedoms. No Africans ,whether they were free or enslaved , could vote. About 50 to 75% of white males in the colonies could vote.
Zenger’s trial was based on an American journalist that had criticized the government. Zengers’ lawyer stated that even though they were true facts , it wasn’t libel.
Some colonies had self- government. The legislature government still clashed with the colonial government which was ruled by the king.

Q

What were the characteristics of colonial society

A

What were the characteristics?
What was the colonial society?
The characteristics of the colonial society was that most colonists lived on farm so that they could raise crops and feed a family. The woman’s job was to stay inside and do house chores , cook ,and maybe also teach. They milked cows and made clothes for the family. The women parents decided who she was going to marry. The houses were small, especially if you had a big family.
Many houses just had planks for beds. If they were lucky enough they would have corn cob mattresses.
In New England single men and women were expected to live with a family as a servant or boarder.
The men were the head of the house hold. The other family members were expected to respect his authority. Men would usually be the voters, and sometimes ,the officeholders.
The children were expected to work at age 7. The boys would work in the fields or barns. The girls would work in the house with their moms learning how to run a house.

How did slavery develop in the colonies and affect colonial life

A

What colonies ?
Colonial life?
It developed in the colonies because the Spanish and Portuguese brought over Africans to work for them as slaves. Other colonies joined in and slavery spread. In 1639 Maryland passed a law stating that baptism did not lead to liberty. It means that people could be enslaved for life. In 1663 a Virginia court passed a law stating that any child born to a slave was a slave also. People who were against slavery started revolts . It began to grow and then ended in 1865 on its own.

Puritans had passed laws to promote education. It required parents to teach their kids and servants how to read. Another law required families to start a Puritan school. The puritans were a white school only. However some Quakers and Anglicans taught some slaves how to read and write secretly. The upper level children had grammar schools after school. It prepared them for college and taught them Latin , Greek ,geography, mathematics, and English. The puritans and Quakers were religious and it affected the government. It affected the government a lot because of the great awakening. It began as a reaction against what some Christians saw as a decline of religious zeal.
The impact of the great awakening lead to many new churches . Methodists and baptists grew quickly. It led to more tolerance to religion differences in the colonies.
Montesquieu wrote a book arguing the powers of the government.he agreed with separation of powers because it keeps any individual or group from gaining too much power. He suggested the government in 3 groups, legislative branch, executive branch, and judicial branch.
