1
Q

Where did Churchill want Britain and the United States to strike first? What was Stalin’s opinion on that matter?

A

North Africa and Southern Europe. Stalin got mad because he wanted the Allies to open the second front in France. Because of this, the USSR had to fight by themselves against the Germans.

Battle of El Alamein

A

By the time Montgomery had arrived to take control of the forces in North Africa, the Germans had advanced to an Egyptian town known as Alamein. They were dug in the ground so well that British forces could not get around them, so Montgomery decided to have a frontal war with them. Battle began on October 23, 1942. Rommel’s forces were beaten.

Q

What happened at the Battle of Stalingrad?

A

Hitler sent his troops, led by General Fredrick Paulus, to retrieve the Caucasus Mountains to get the oil fields. The army was also sent to capture Stalingrad. The Germans had night raids every night and it looked completely awful for the USSR, but Stalin said to save the city that was named after him to his death. Then, another winter set in and the USSR trapped the German soldiers in Stalingrad, cutting them off from supplies and making them freeze to death. They eventually surrendered with 90,000 soldiers left out of the 330,000.
