Q

What is anti-matter?

A

Anti-matter are particles that have the same mass and charge as matter, but oppositely charged. Dirac predicted their existence.

Q

Write an equation for the pair-production of an electron and a positron. Why don’t they move off in opposite directions after the splitting?

A

hf = 2mc^2 + Ek1 + Ek2
The incident gamma ray has some momentum.

Q

What are the 4 fundamental forces of nature and what do they act on? List in ascending order of strength.

A

Gravitational, weak nuclear, electromagnetic, strong nuclear. Strong nuclear acts on protons and neutrons to bind the nucleus. Electromagnetic acts on charged particles to bind atoms and molecules. Weak nuclear acts on all particles as B decay. Gravitational acts on all particles to hold the universe together.

Q

What happens as energy increases in colliding particles?

A

The higher the energy of colliding particles, the greater the variety of new particles produced and the greater the mass of the particles.

Q

What are quarks?

A

Quarks are elementary particles out of which baryons and mesons are made. They have a charge of +/-(2/3e or 1/3e).

Q

What are baryons?

A

Barons and antibaryons are made up of 3 (anti)quarks. They have a mass greater than or equal to that of the proton.

Q

What are mesons?

A

Mesons consist of a quark and an antiquark. They have a mass between that of an electron and a proton.
