Ch. 32 Flashcards
association
association of perio with conditions including cardiovascuar/cerebrovascular problems, DM, preterm labor, low birth weight, pneumonia
causation
an association between a given factor and a health effect does not mean that the factor caused the disease; it is not possible to prove causality between perio and systemic diseases
possible mechanisms for impact on systemic disease
- infection
- inflammation
- immune response
community acquired pneumonia
contracted outside of hospital setting, most are caused by aspiration of oropharyngeal organisms such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae
hospital acquired pneumonia
infection of lungs contracted during a stay in a hospital; usually results from organisms called potential respiratory pathogens (PRPs) that are generally found in gastro tract but may colonize mouth and oropharynx
ventilator associated pneumonia
type of hospital acquired develops after intubation for mechanical ventilation; placement of trach tube can transport organisms into lower airway
