What is the Legislative Branch?
US Congress
What does the Legislative Branch do?
Make the laws.
What is the Executive Branch?
The President of the United States
What does the Executive Branch do?
Responsible for executing and carrying out the laws.
What is the Judicial Branch?
Supreme Court
What does the Judicial Branch do?
Interprets the meaning of the laws passed by Congress and sets punishments for people who break those laws.

Each of the 3 branches of government has ways to check, or limit, the powers of the other branches.
How does the Executive Branch (President) check the Legislative Branch (Congress)?
While Congress has the power to make laws. The President has the power to veto those laws.
How does Congress (Legislative Branch) check the President (Executive Branch)?
Congress can override the President’s veto with a 2/3rds majority vote of both the House and Congress.
How does the Supreme Court (Judicial Branch) check the President (Executive Branch)?
The Supreme Court can declare the President’s actions “unconstitutional.”
How can the Supreme Court (Judicial Branch) check Congress (Legislative Branch)?
The Supreme Court can declare a law passed by Congress “unconstitutional.”
