Q

Name the player type:

This player is often referred to as the maniac. He can be the most dangerous player at the table. He can and will either lose more or win more than anyone at the table, though he is invariably a lifetime loser at the game. Although this player can come in varying guises, he is characterized by very aggressive betting and raising with few or no standards. He will raise without regard to his cards, position, or opponent.

Q

Name the player type:

This player is often referred to as the calling station. This player is characterized by her willingness to call too often without any regard for the odds. As with each of the various player types, she comes in varying degrees of both looseness and passiveness. At her most striking, this player will call all bets down to the river with no chance of winning and will never raise, even with the nuts.

Name the player type:

This player is often referred to as the rock. This player is characterized by a very conservative playing style. He will play very few hands and raise even fewer. A lifetime loser in all but the smallest of games, this player is content to sit for hours throwing hands away in the hope that AA will soon arrive.

Q

Name the player type:

This player is often referred to as “Sir.” Joking aside, this player is almost invariably a professional or aspiring professional. He is selective about the hands he plays and is extremely aggressive with those hands that he does play. (Note: because of the often fantastic implied odds offered to the NL player, the tight-aggressive NL player will often play looser than one might expect prior to the flop and resort to a more reflective tight style post-flop.)

Q

If you meet the _____ of your opponents, they will meet yours.

A

NEEDS

This is a basic truism of life — not just of poker. Players often think I’m simply being funny when I refer to the table I’m playing at as one big happy dysfunctional family, but it’s a lot closer to reality than most could ever imagine. Find out what drives your opponents emotionally and then meet their needs. If your need is for their chips, then they’ll happily oblige. The consequence of not meeting your need is that you go away. If you leave, then their needs will no longer be met.
