Ch 3 Key Terms Flashcards
Angular momentum
Measure of the motion of a rotating object in terms of its speed and how widely the objects mass is distributed around its axis
Aphelion
Point where a planet is farthest from sun in orbit
Apogee
Point in its orbit where an earth satellite is farthest from earth
Asteroid belt
Region b/w orbits of mars and Jupiter where most asteroids are
Astronomical unit
(AU) unit of length defined as avg dist b/w earth and sun
1.5 x 10^8 km
Density
Mass divided by vol
Eccentricity
In an ellipse, ratio of distance b/w foci to major axis
Ellipse
Closed curve for which the sum of the distances from any point on the ellipse to 2 points inside is always the same
Escape speed
Speed a body must have in order to break away from gravity of another body
Foci
Two fixed points inside an ellipse from which sum of distances to any point on the ellipse is constant
Gravity
Mutual attraction of material bodies or particles
Keplers first law
Each planet moves around the sun in an orbit that is an ellipse, w the sun at one focus of the ellipse
Keplers second law
Straight line joining a planet and the sun sweeps out equal areas in space in equal intervals of time
Keplers third law
The square of a planets orbital period is directly proportional to cube of semi major axis of orbit
Major axis
Max diameter of an ellipse
