Ch. 3 Inflammation, The Inflammatory Response, and Fever Flashcards
Automatic response to cell injury that:
- Minimizes effects of injury or infection
- Removes damaged & dead tissue
- Generates tissue
Reaction of vascularized tissue to cell injury/death
Neutralizes harmful agents
Inflammation
Characteristics of Inflammation (5)
- Redness (rubor)
- Swelling
- Heat (calor)
- Pain/discomfort
- Loss of function
- Recognizing & adhering to the organism
- Engulfment of the organism
- Enzymes and radicals released to kill the organism
Phagocytosis: cell killing
Form clots
Platelets
In lymphoid tissue
Spleen
Lymph nodes
Thymus gland
Lymphocytes
Arrives at the scene first in the greatest numbers engulfing bacteria & debris
Neutrophils
Have toxic proteins for intruders
Eosinophils
Least common and stores histamine
Basophils
Vasodilation
Increase permeability
Macrophages
Monocytes
Fluid, cells, or other substances that have been slowly exuded or have escaped from. Loos vessels and have been deposited in tissues or on tissue surfaces
Exudate
Watery, pale, yellow, transparent
Serous exudate
Like serous, but also has blood in it
Sanguineous exudate
Has a large volume of blood
Hemorrhagic exudate
Strands of platelets & WBC trying to scab
Fibrinous exudate
Composed of degraded WBCs, proteins, & tissue debris
Purulent exudate
