Perlocutionary phase (birth-10mos)
- Behavior has consequences but is not produced with communicative intent
- Child can relate to an object or to a person, but not to both at the same time
Illocutionary phase (10-12mos)
Child realizes that other’s help can be elicited by communicating
Joint attention
-Relating to a person about an object
>Follow gaze
>Pointing
-The more time an infant spends in joint attention with an adult, the more rapidly they develop language.
Locutionary phase (12mos +)
Child uses language to refer (i.e., words as symbols)
Conventionalized (symbolic communication)
- Occur repeatedly in the same form not physically involving the object itself
- Occur in a range of contexts
- Not yet referential
Collective monologues
Look back at notes because you may have missed a couple terms…
Child “conversations” tend to be monologues with conversational pauses.
Piaget- Skill
Preschool children are egocentric, having difficulty taking others’ points of view.
Piaget’s- WILL
“Children are not trying to engage in dialogue.”
Vygotsky (child convo) will
children learn by internalizing and practicing skills they have learned from adult instruction.
Responding to speech (1-2 yrs old)
Children know that they are supposed to respond to others’ utterances or take turns
Responding to talk with talk (<2yrs)
Children under two are more likely to respond to questions than to nonquestions; especially to “what” questions (even if they don’t understand)
Mean length of utterance (MLU)
On-topic utterances that a child can produce in sequence
