Ch 3 Flashcards
1
Q
What are the possible uptake & elimination routes for an organisms (6)
A
- Water
- Food
- Dermal uptake
- Loss from gills
- Biotransformation
- Loss in urine & feces
2
Q
What is the black box approach ?
A
a mathematical model that can model the process of intake & uptake of an organism.
3
Q
What assumptions have to be made with the black box ?
A
- must assume that only one method of uptake & elimination is dominant.
- both uptake & elimination happen in one compartment
- for some systems the entire organism may represent a compartment
- animals are often represented as a three compartment system.
- each of the transitions between the compartments will have rate constants
- compartment is instantly & homogeneously mixed
- kinetics & rate coefficients are constant over time.
- No biotransformation or organism effects take place in this compartment
4
Q
What are the 3 compartments which animals are made up of
A
- Fat storage
- Blood
- Liver
