A strong belief or feeling toward people, things, and situations
Attitude
Attitudes hold that employees dislike work and must be closely supervised to get them to do their work.
Theory X
Attitudes hold that employees like to do work and do not need to be closely supervised to get them to do their work.
Theory Y
States that managements attitudes and expectations of employees, and how they treat them, largely determine their employees performance.
Pygmalion Effect
Set of attitudes toward work.
Job satisfaction
Process of determining employee attitudes about the job and work environment.
Job satisfaction survey
Our overall attitude about ourselves.
Self concept
Our belief in our capability to perform in a specific situation.
Self-efficacy
Occurs when your expectations affect your success or failures.
Self-fulfilling prophecy
One’s perception of the reasons for behavior.
Attributions
Things that have worth or are important to the individual.
Values
Set of standards by which the individual lives.
Value system
The moral standard of right and wrong behavior.
Ethics
Diffusion of responsibility
Everyone else does it. So it’s okay. (when people are less likely to act or feel responsible in a group, thinking others will take charge.)
Greater Good
I did it for the good of others or the company. (actions or decisions made for the benefit of the majority)
Displacement of Responsibility
I was only following orders. They told me to do it. (when someone shifts the blame for their actions onto another person or authority)
Advantageous Comparison
I’m not as bad as others. (where someone justifies unethical behavior by comparing it to something worse.)
Disregard for or distortion of consequences
If I do get caught I’ll just get a small punishment anyways.

- Attitude toward work
Lowest level of moral development
Pre-conventional, behavior is motivated by self interest. -seek rewards and avoid punishment.
2nd level of moral development
Conventional behavior is motivated by meeting the groups expectations to fit in by copying others behavior.
Highest level of moral development
Post-conventional behavior is motivated by the desire to do the right thing, even at the risk of alienating the group.
The golden rule
Treat others how you want to be treated.
Stakeholders approach
You try to create a win win situation for everyone.
The 4 way test includes
- Is it the truth
- Is it fair to all concerned
- Will it build good will and better friendship
- Will it be beneficial to all concerned
