Ch 3 Flashcards
Atmosphere
the envelope of gases that surrounds the planet
Weather
The condition of earth’s atmosphere at a particular time and place
Water vapor
Water in the form of a gas.
Density
You calculate the density of a substance by dividing its mass by its volume .
Air pressure
Is the result of the weight of a column of air pushing on an area.
Barometer
An instrument that is used to measure air pressure.
Mercury barometer
Consists of a long glass tube that is closed at one end and open at the other.
Aneroid barometer
Has an airtight metal chamber.the metal chamber is sensitive to change in air pressure.
Altitude
Or elevation, is the distance above sea level.
Troposphere
Turning or changing
Stratosphere
Extend from the top of the troposphere to about 50 kilometer above Earth’s surface
Mesosphere
So the mesosphere is the middle layer of the atmosphere.
Thermosphere
Extend from 80 kilometer above Earth’s surface outward into space.
Ionosphere
Begins about 80 kilometers above the surface and extend 400 kilometer.
Exosphere
Is the outer layer.
Radiation
One form of electromagnetic energy.
Infrared radiation
Has waves
Lengths that are longer than wavelength for red lights.
Ultraviolet radiation
Which is an invisible form of energy with wavelength that are shorter than wavelengths d
for violet light.
Scattering
When you look at the sky, the light you see has been scattered by gas molecules in the atmosphere.
Greenhouse
The greenhouse effect, is a natural process.
