Ch. 29 Flashcards
Temperomandibular Joint (TMJ)
This is bilateral and is the articulation between the temporal bone and the mandible.
Articular Disc
Fibrous pad of dense collagen tissue that sits between the condyle head and the glenoid fossa
- Thickest in Posterior-Posterior Band
- Thinner in Middle-Intermediate Zone
- Thicker In anterior-Anterior Band
Articular Disc
Synovial Cavities
Is above/below Disc.
-It secretes synovial fluid for lubrication
Where is the entire joint surrounded by a fibrous capsule?
Synovial Cavities
What prevents the condyle from being displaced?
Temperomandibular Ligament
Retrodiscal Pad
Area posterior to the Disc
-retrodiscal tissues are present (Ex. Loose CT, Nerves, Blood Supply)
What is TMJ referred to as ?
The Hinge and Sliding Joint
2 movements of the TMJ:
Hinge and sliding Joint
- Rotational
* Gliding
Sensory messages apparently from TMJ that are actually traveling to the brain from other regions
Referred pain
Which portion of the Disc is NOT innervated?
Central Portion
What do popping and clicking sounds mean?
Disc displacement
What does it mean when you hear a grinding sound?
- Adhesions In synovial Cavities
- Arthritis
- Disc Perforations
Subluxation
Dislocation of the mandible
Manual manipulation back into place
Subluxation
