Ch. 2.3 (Measures Of Center) Flashcards
Sample
A sub collection of data selected from a bigger population
Statistic
A numerical measurement describing some characteristic of a sample
Percentile
A measure of location which divide a set of data, arranged from smallest to largest (into 100 groups with about 1% of the values in each group)
Quartile
A measure of location within a data set, denoted Q1, Q2 (median), and Q3, which divide a set of data into four groups with about 25% of the values in each group
Deviation
How much data a sample deviates away from the mean
Variance
A number that informs us about the spread of a data set
Box Plot
A graph of a data set that helps to visualize the spread of a data set and consists of a line extending from the minimum value to the maximum value and a box with lines drawn at Q1, the median, and Q3
Mean
A measurement used to find the center of a data set by adding all of the data values and dividing by the total number of data values
Median
A measurement for the center of a data set found by arranging the data set in order from smallest to largest
