How did social change and conflict mark the 1920’s?
Reformers pushed for bans on alcohol. Struggles occurred over ideas and race.
Why was the 19th Amendment important for democracy?
In a democracy, all people are equal and deserve equal rights. Since men could vote, it was only fair to give women equal right to vote.
Why did many people want to end Prohibition?
because it had failed: people were still drinking and organized crime had increased
How did flappers represent the spirit of the 1920’s?
Their dress, activities, and attitudes were fun and free from past restrictions.

YES: because it was more about the spirit than the technology; people could have gone to clubs and the theater for entertainment. or NO:because radio and movies spread the spirit of the decade
What was the “New Mass Culture” about?
Both the automobile and the radio changed American life. The automobile created new businesses and made travel easier, and the radio became a leading supplier of entertainment.
How did changes in American society help to create the flapper generation?
Cars and radio brought a new freedom to people and flappers were an expression of this.
What was the Scopes trial about?
John Scopes, a high school biology teacher, was accused of violating Tennessee law by teaching the theory of evolution to his students.
Why did the Scopes trial become a national sensation?
The prosecutor in the trial had run for President three times, and the defense attorney was a famous lawyer. It pit modern, urban Americans agains traditional, rural Americans.
What was the Great Migration?
It was the movement of large number of African Americans from the South to the North.

What were causes of the Great Migration?
They include job opportunities, and seeking relief from discrimination.

It gave Americans access to shared experiences. It provided a cultural outlet accessible to many.
How did automobiles change the lives of Americans?
It increased freedom and independence; created new businesses; made it possible for people to move to suburbs; made people in rural areas feel less isolated; encouraged tourism.
