What are the 3 classes of administration routes?
Enteral (within the gastrointestinal tract)
Parenteral (by route other than GI tract, typically by skin injection)
Topical (skin)
Enteral routes include:
oral, rectal, vaginal
Parenteral routes include:
intramuscular, intravenous, subcutaneous, intradermal
sublingual administration
drug is placed under tongue and dissolved (allows for rapid absorption for immediate onset action)
buccal administration
drug is placed against cheek; dissolves along mucous membrane (allows for local effect)
rectal adminstration
used when a pt. cannot take a drug orally, but the drug needs to go through the GI tract
Topical routes include:
lotions, sprays, ointments, tinctures, or as unit doses called transdermal patches (used on the skin and diffuses into bloodstream)
What medical tool does parenteral administration call for
syringes and needles (aseptic technique)

in gauges
Sealed glass contained designed to hold a single dose of drug (single-use)
