Team nursing
registered nurse leads team, provide direct patient care, leader develops care plan and coordinates, hierarchical communication.
Advantages – collaborative style, high level of autonomy, conferences help solve patient problems, Cordinator has time to manage unit issues.
Disadvantages – RN team leader does not spend time with patient, team leader needs to take time to delegate work.
Total patient care
Registered nurse is responsible for all aspects of care for one or more patients during a shift, care can be delegated, registered nurse works directly with patient and family and healthcare team members.
Advantages – patient satisfaction high, registered nurse plan care, high degree of collaboration with healthcare team members.
Disadvantages – continuity of care is often a problem if registered nurse does not communicate patient needs to another, may not be cost-effective because of high number of registered nurses needed to provide care.
Primary nursing
One primary registered nurse assumes responsibility for a caseload of patients, when registered nurse is working she provides care for the same patients during their stay in a facility, registered nurse assesses patients and develops a plan of care and Delivers appropriate nursing interventions, communication is lateral from nurse to nurse.
Advantages – high level of authority and autonomy, collaboration with position, continuity of care, reduced number of errors.
Disadvantages – associate nurse cannot change care plan without discussing with primary nurse, does not necessarily decrease cost of care.
Case management
Collaborative process of assessment, planning, Facilitation, and advocacy for options and services to meet an individual’s health needs through communication and available resources to promote quality cost effective outcomes
Nurse manager
Sets the philosophy for work unit, ensures appropriate staffing, mobilize and staff in institutional resources to achieve objectives, motivate staff members to carry out their work, set standards of performance, and makes decisions to achieve objectives
High priority
An immediate threat to the patient survival or safety
Intermediate priority
Nonemergency, non-life-threatening actual or potential needs that a patient and family members are experiencing
Low priority
Actual or potential problems that are not directly related to the patient’s illness or disease
Magnet hospital
Has a transformed culture with a practice environment that is dynamic, autonomous, collaborative, and positive for nurses
The five rights of delegation
Right task, right circumstances, right person, right direction/communication, right supervision/evaluation
Functional nursing
Involves a task approach to client care, with tasks being delegated by the charge nurse to individual members of the team. Results in fragmented care and lack of accountability.
Democratic leadership style
Empower staff towards excellence because the style of leadership allows nurses an opportunity to grow professionally
Autocratic style of leadership
Task oriented and directive
Situational leadership style
Uses a style that depends on the situation and events
Laissez-faire leadership style
Allow staff to work without assistance, direction, or supervision
